48 Hours in Vermont, Fall Edition
1. Route 100
This is known as the “Skier’s Highway” but really it’s for outdoor lovers of all kinds. This “official” scenic byway (aren’t they all pretty scenic?) hugs the edge of the Green Mountains and gives you glimpses of streams, waterfalls, mountain passes and covered bridges as you make your way towards Middlebury.
2. Haymaker Bun Co.
There are so many great places to eat in town, but we like to start the morning at cozy Haymaker for coffee and baked goods (did someone say BUNS?). Sit outside, watch Otter Creek flow by, and if you worked there or elsewhere in town, reminisce about the highs (and lows) of the brunch rush.
3. Snake Mountain
Ok this one is obvious, but only because it is so incredible. This hike is just shy of 5 miles out and back and gives you unobstructed views of the Champlain Valley, Lake Champlain AND the ‘Daks. At the top, the concrete foundation of a hotel that burned down in 1925 is a perfect setup for the “wish you were here” self-timer jumping photo that you’ll send to all your friends.
4. Happy Valley Orchard
Just down the road from the college, Happy Valley makes their own cider donuts fresh every day. You can also pick your own apples -- they have the classics like McIntosh and HoneyCrisp, as well as some that definitely sound like they could also be craft beers (Northern Spy, Keepsake or Winesapp anyone?).
5. Falls of Lana
See the entirety of Lake Dunmore lit up from above and if you’re brave enough, jump in the falls before it gets too cold (unless you’re one of those winter ice bath people). This is also a great spot for longer hikes, camping, and climbing!
6. Middlebury College SnowBowl
This is where our founders tested their first snow pant/ski bib SheFly prototypes! Take the hiking trail for a short but steep adventure to the top and connect to the Long Trail if you want to pretend you’re a hardened Through-Hiker. If you time it right, the chairlift might also be open for a less aerobic journey to the summit. Our hot take? This is THE best leaf-peeping spot in the area.
7. Dakin Farms
One word: cheese. Two words: Cheese SAMPLES. This is a must on the drive up Route 7 to Burlington.
8. Vermont Flannel Company
The name speaks for itself. Pair your SheFlys with a nice cozy flannel and send us a picture from the covered bridge next door!
9. Shelburne Farms
About 20 minutes south of Burlington, Shelburne Farms is a majestic place to stroll, learn how to milk a cow and walk along the pebbled shores of Lake Champlain. In the summer, the space functions as one of the best outdoor concert venues we’ve seen -- a very good reason to plan a return trip to VT next summer! Pick up a growler at Fiddlehead Brewery next door afterwards. (Shoutout to ALL the Vermont breweries too, stay tuned for our favs in another post).
10. The Town of Middlebury
Middlebury wouldn't be nearly as charming without all of its independent businesses! From Flatbread, Noonies, and the Co-Op for lunch, Otter Creek Bakery, the Tea House and Midd Chocolates for a sweet treat, to Frog Hollow Bikes for exploring and the Outdoor Store for any gear you may need, take an afternoon stroll down Main Street and check them all out. If you’re looking for a longer walk after all those snacks, the Trail Around Middlebury (TAM) does not disappoint.
