Sustainability

We care about the planet and we know you do too. That’s why we’re constantly working to create a more sustainable supply chain.

Sustainability Goals

What We're Doing Now

Our clothing is designed to last, starting with our first flagship Go There™ Collection.
The fashion industry accounts for 10% of global carbon emissions and people are now wearing each item they buy for half as long as they did just 20 years ago. That’s why we invest in durable fabrics and hardware, as well as timeless silhouettes and colors, so you can wear your pants for years (and hopefully, decades) instead of months, when they'll always be "in style."

All of our products are also compatible with each other, so you don't need to buy new pieces for functionality and can instead get additional use cases out of apparel you already own.

In a world of fast fashion, our supply chain is intentionally slow.
Our Go There Collection fabric is made in the same city where we manufacture to reduce emissions from shipping. We also ship our pants using ocean freight instead of via air, which is slower but significantly better for the planet. We were able to make our Go FreeCollection even closer to home -- domestically in Los Angeles, CA -- with a smaller carbon footprint. This is also where our warehouse is for easy distribution to customers right down the road.

We produce in small batches, and we only order what we need.
As you saw with our first product launch of the Go There Pant, and again with the launch of our second collection, the Go Free7/8 Leggings and 6" Shorts, and yet again with our first licensing collab with LIVSN on the Women's Ecotrek GoFly® Overalls, we frequently utilize pre-ordering and crowdfunding to get an accurate read on demanded quantities, as well as color and size breakdowns. This ensures that customers get exactly what they want, and that we're not left with extra product that would otherwise go to waste.

We source recycled and sustainable textiles and trims wherever possible.
Our Go Free Collection of Leggings and Shorts marks our first collection made entirely of 100% recycled fabric. In choosing swag and merch partners, we prioritize those who can do the same, like Outpatch for our Toxic Feminist Propaganda patches, which are made from 100% recycled plastic water bottles.

In 2023, we placed our first order of Go There Pants with a C0, PFAS-free Durable Water Repellant (DWR) coating ahead of legislation requirements. Prior production runs utilized the previously least harmful option available: C6 short chain DWR. While several large companies in the outdoor industry and beyond have chosen to offload any PFAS product and place it directly into landfills (and therefore waterways), we are committed to sustainably selling through the high-performance gear we have instead of trashing it. We've also committed to all future production runs remaining PFAS-free, now that alternatives are more widely available to small businesses and that the public has become more familiarized with a lower level of water repellency performance in exchange for a less toxic product.

We're picky about who we work with.
We work with partners who prioritize sustainable practices, such as the efficient use of fabric to minimize waste, at every step of the way. Our manufacturer and fabric supplier are both members of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition, a non-profit alliance made up over 250 leading apparel, footwear and textile brands, retailers, suppliers, service providers, trade associations, non-profits, NGOs, and academic institutions working to reduce environmental impact and promote social justice throughout the global value chain.

The Gnara team works remotely and has our headquarters in a co-working space, which helps us share resources collectively with other small businesses while also reducing our transportation costs and overall carbon footprint.

How To

Reuse (and then Recycle!) Your Mailer

Our 100% recycled poly mailers are made from 100% recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). These recovered, used plastics are made up of post and pre-consumer waste that keeps materials in use, reduces dependence on landfill, conserves resources, and protects the environment from plastic pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

Before recycling it further, please reuse it! All of Gnara's mailers have two adhesive strips, meaning they are reusable and have a built-in second use. Detailed instructions here. This prevents another single-use piece of packaging from being used. If you are processing a return or exchange, we'd love to see a Gnara mailer getting a second use. And if not, we're sure someone else in your life would love to!

Your mailer can usually be recycled curbside where soft plastics are accepted. Your local government's website will have the most accurate information for recycling by location and service provider, but here are some additional resources:

US: Find curbside recycling services near you with WM and How2Recycle

UK: Find local recycling collections through the UK government.

Canada: Find recycling near you with Emterra.

Australia: Check your local government's website for recycling options.

New Zealand: Find plastic recycling options on PlasticNZ.

💡 Pro tip: Some recycling service providers allow you to put all your recycling (except glass and plastic bags) into one bin. Most communities will have drop off locations specifically for plastic bags, while others may support local food waste recycling which can be turned into sustainable gardening soil.
